Years of history and education
St David’s Girls High came into being in 1961. through the sisters of the Order of Holy Parakeet invited by the Anglican Diocese of Zimbabwe. The first principal was sister Margarel Clere in 196l-1972 and later sister Rosa took over from her until the school was handed over to the Anglican Diocese of Manicaland in 1978 (then Mashonaland) when Mr Gervas Chidawanyika was appointed Principal and remained as the head of school till 1993.
There was felt to be a special need for a girls’ secondary boarding school as boys appeared to have preferential treatment where education was concerned and girls were often considered as not being worthy of formal education. ln 1977 at the heigh1 of Chimurenga war the situa1ion at Bonda became very dangerous and the school moved with all the pupils to Mutare where they shared the premises of St Dominics· Secondary School until 1981 when the first formers came back to Bonda under the care of Miss P. Went and in 1982 the whole school returned and was soon in full operation.
The school was originally built to accommodate 350 boarders but at this 1ime. there are 930 boarders and about 30 day scholars. This made the convent which was originally occupied by sis1ers to be converted to sixth form dormitories and dining room. The junior block and the form one and two classes were cxtended.Unicef helped in the development of the school by donating funds for drilling boreholes which supply clean drinking water to the school.
There has been a growing need for facilities such as laboratories and staff accommodation Currently the school has 45 teaching staff and 43 ancillary staff who are accommodated in sixty houses which the school has. It is against this background that the school in applying for assistance from BeitTrust to construct a semi defected staff house.
